Laser Plumbing East Tamaki

In 2010 a new award was established in honour of founder Peter Bassett. The Peter Bassett Laser International Business of the Year Award is the top accolade in recognition of the best Laser business across both trades, electrical and plumbing, and Trans-Tasman.

The 2011 annual Laser conference was held in Darwin, Australia and with 178 Laser businesses throughout New Zealand and Australia vying for the award, competition was stiff. This year Laser Plumbing East Tamaki took out the top award, also scooping up the Silver Award for Outstanding Growth, Silver Award for Systems and the Laser Plumbing NZ Business of the Year Award.

General Manager of Laser Group New Zealand Scott Carr sums it up “Over the last 12 months Marc and Roger have shown an attitude to their business that really epitomises what the Peter Bassett International award is all about. In a pretty tough market they have continued to grow their profits remarkably. Their business is one that many other Laser members aspire to emulate”. The sense of reward was special not only for owners Marc and Roger but for their whole team. And it also had sentimental meaning as a tribute to Pete and his family. “It was a fantastic feeling, it is recognition of a lot of years of hard work” says Roger of winning the award.

Laser Plumbing East Tamaki is an amalgamation of two of Auckland’s most successful plumbing businesses. Owners Marc Firman and Roger Westbrooke joined forces to better leverage their complementary skills to form PlumbGas Systems Ltd, joining Laser Group in April 2007 to become Laser Plumbing East Tamaki. Both Marc and Roger have over 25 years’ experience each in the plumbing industry and have worked hard to get to where they are today part of which has included putting strong processes in place to improve efficiencies in operation. They have fully embraced the Laser Systems and have recently rolled out the use of PDAs.

The last 12-24 months have been particularly tough with some of their key new housing customers stopping trading but rather than following suit, this prompted their residentially motivated business to diversify.  They now also offer service and maintenance, light commercial, schools, restaurants and bars as well as new homes and alterations.

Employing a business coach assisted them to make changes within their business in order to improve it.  There has also been a focus on human resources to ensure a quality team to move them forward and this now includes a full time Estimator and highly experienced Office Administrator.  They moved into bigger premises about 2 years ago which is more accessible and provides a much larger profile, being able to be clearly seen from a busy main

The key to their growth and success during tough times lies in making sure the solution to their customer’s problem is found and showing you can do the lot (a one stop shop). Even though they now have to work harder at proactively sourcing new work and up-selling on every job, they have a different philosophy than when they first started out- placing more emphasis and priority on their major clients. Their success also relies on the quality of their team around them so Marc and Roger have put a lot of time and effort into developing and supporting their team by holding regular meetings and social events.

With plans in the future to continue to grow their business including more staff and more quality customers there is no doubt they will continue taking it to the top.
